Students can switch into the Skilled Worker route without leaving the UK — but only on the right timing: course completed, or a job that starts after it ends, with PhD students unlocked after 24 months of study. Most switchers price in as new entrants at a £33,400 floor, and the sponsor pays no skills charge for them at all. This guide covers the timing rules, the money, and the Graduate-route alternative now shrinking to 18 months.

From the Library to the Payroll
The student-to-Skilled-Worker switch is the cheapest sponsorship an employer will ever do — no immigration skills charge, a new entrant salary floor, and a candidate already in the country — and the most time-sensitive application most graduates will ever make, because course dates, visa expiry and job start dates all have to line up. The switching rules on gov.uk are short; the sequencing around them is where applications succeed or fail.

Who Can Switch, and When
Course Completion and Timing
You can switch once you have completed the course your Student visa was granted for, or earlier if the sponsored job's start date falls after your course completion date. PhD candidates can switch after 24 months of doctoral study without finishing. Applications can go in up to three months before the job starts — and must go in before the Student visa expires.
Switching Eligibility by Status
| Status | Can you switch? | Timing condition |
|---|---|---|
| Course completed | Yes | Any time while the Student visa remains valid |
| Course still running | Yes | Only if the job starts after course completion |
| PhD in progress | Yes | After 24 months of doctoral study |
| Graduate visa holder | Yes | Any time before the Graduate visa expires |
New Entrant Status
Who Qualifies as a New Entrant
Student switchers who completed a bachelor's degree or higher qualify as new entrants, as do under-26s and those training towards regulated professions — pricing the first sponsored years at 70% of the going rate with a £33,400 floor. The cap is four years combined across new entrant and Graduate visa time, which is precisely why the route choice below is a mathematics question, not a lifestyle one.
Salary Thresholds After July 2025
PhD Salary Discounts
Doctoral switchers can do better than the new entrant rate where the PhD is relevant to the role: 80% of the going rate at a £33,400 floor for STEM doctorates, 90% at £37,500 for others. The discount is assessed against the job, so a chemistry PhD sponsored as a software developer takes the new entrant route, not the STEM one.
Salary Minimums by Category
| Category | Annual floor | Going-rate requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | £41,700 | 100% |
| New entrant | £33,400 | 70% |
| STEM PhD | £33,400 | 80% |
| Relevant PhD (non-STEM) | £37,500 | 90% |
Whichever category applies, the higher of the floor and the discounted going rate wins — worked examples by occupation code are in our salary requirements guide. Maintenance of £1,270 held for 28 days applies unless the sponsor certifies it, though most students in the UK over a year are exempt anyway.
The RQF Level 6 Rule
Since 22 July 2025 the sponsored job must sit at degree level — a rule about the occupation code, not your qualifications, as our RQF Level 6 guide explains. Graduate-scheme roles at professional employers almost all qualify; the roles that catch people out are mid-skill jobs that survive only on the Immigration Salary List or Temporary Shortage List, where dependant restrictions now apply.
Transitional Cover for Existing Workers
Workers sponsored in roles that later fell below the line keep extending within them — cover that protects people already on the route, not students entering it. A student switching in 2026 meets the 2026 rules in full; there is no inheriting an employer's older, easier certificate terms.
Sponsorship and the Certificate
The employer must hold a sponsor licence and assign a certificate of sponsorship stating the role, code and salary — and the role must be a genuine vacancy, not a favour dressed as a job. The student switch is the ISC-exempt sponsorship: no immigration skills charge on assignment or later extensions, a saving worth £1,320 a year to larger employers and worth mentioning in any hiring conversation.
Compliance Obligations
Sponsorship duties start on day one: reporting changes within the deadlines, keeping records, paying what the certificate promises. For the worker, the practical obligation is symmetrical — work the sponsored role as described, because undisclosed drift in duties or hours is a compliance problem that surfaces at extension or settlement.
Applying and Timing the Move
Apply online before the Student visa expires, up to three months before the job starts; in-country decisions typically arrive within 8 weeks, with paid priority options. Stay inside the Common Travel Area while the application is pending — leaving withdraws it. The elegant sequence is offer → certificate → application in the weeks after final submission of the dissertation, landing the decision before graduation ceremonies.
Essential Documentation
- Passport, BRP or digital status, and the certificate of sponsorship reference.
- Evidence of course completion where the switch relies on it — transcript or completion letter.
- English is usually already proved by the UK degree; maintenance only if not exempt or certified.
- TB certificate and criminal record certificate only where the route or occupation requires them.
The Graduate Visa Alternative
The Graduate route buys unsponsored time — two years for applications made on or before 31 December 2026, 18 months from 1 January 2027, three years for PhDs — at £937 plus the health surcharge. It is the right buy for graduates still hunting; it is a poor buy for anyone holding a qualifying offer, because Graduate time counts nothing towards settlement while burning the new entrant clock.
Choosing Between the Pathways
Hold a qualifying offer: switch directly — the settlement clock starts now and the sponsor saves the skills charge. No offer yet: the Graduate route keeps you lawfully working while you search, and you switch from it any time before expiry, as our Graduate strategy guide maps in detail. The shrinking 18-month window makes the drifting middle path — take the Graduate visa, relax, look later — measurably worse than it used to be.
Common Challenges
Three failure patterns dominate: job start dates that collide with course completion dates; occupation codes chosen by job title rather than duties; and visa expiry arriving mid-recruitment because nobody diarised it. All three are timing problems, and all three are solved by starting the sequence a term earlier than feels necessary — the wider switching landscape, including from other visa categories, is in our switching guide, and our student visa changes guide covers the study-side rules.
Frequently askedQuestions about switching from a student visa
Can I switch before finishing my course?
Yes, if the sponsored job starts after your course completion date — or, for PhD students, once you have completed 24 months of doctoral study. Otherwise, complete the course first and apply while your Student visa remains valid.
What salary do I need as a graduate?
Most student switchers qualify as new entrants: 70% of the occupation's going rate with a £33,400 floor, whichever is higher. Relevant PhDs improve the percentage to 80% (STEM) or 90% at a £37,500 floor. Without any discount, the standard £41,700 rule applies.
Does my employer pay the immigration skills charge?
No — sponsoring someone switching from a Student visa is exempt from the charge, and the exemption carries into later extensions with the same sponsor. That saves employers up to £1,320 a year and is worth raising explicitly when negotiating sponsorship.
Should I take the Graduate visa instead?
Only if you lack a qualifying offer. The Graduate route — two years now, 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027 — buys search time but starts no settlement clock and burns the four-year new entrant cap. With an offer in hand, switching directly wins on every measure.
How long does the switch take?
Typically up to 8 weeks in-country at the standard service, with priority options where available. Apply up to three months before the job's start date, before your Student visa expires, and do not travel outside the Common Travel Area while it is pending.
Does student time count towards settlement?
No — neither Student nor Graduate visa time counts towards the five-year Skilled Worker settlement period. The settlement clock starts on the day Skilled Worker leave is granted, which is the strongest argument for switching sooner rather than later.
